Competitive eating began as a novelty in the late 19th century, with early pie-eating contests in places like Toronto. Over time, what started as lighthearted community entertainment evolved into a global spectacle involving amateurs and professionals competing for fame, prizes, and records.

While most contests end without incident, a small number have ended in tragedy—often due to choking or related medical emergencies.

A 20-year-old college athlete, Nicpon choked during a charity hot dog eating contest. Despite emergency efforts and hospital treatment, she died the following day.

At a baseball stadium taco-eating contest, Hutchins collapsed after choking. He later died in hospital, prompting legal action from his family over safety concerns.
