10 People Who Died Taking Selfies in Recent Times

 

Selfies—self-portrait photos usually taken with a smartphone or selfie stick—have become one of the most popular trends in modern social media. People often take them to capture memorable moments, showcase achievements, or simply express themselves online. Even famous astronaut Buzz Aldrin famously took a selfie in space in 1966.

However, the desire to capture the “perfect shot” has sometimes led to tragic consequences. A study published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care estimated that around 259 people died in selfie-related incidents between October 2011 and November 2017.

Below are ten examples of fatal accidents linked to selfie-taking in recent years:

10. Fell Off a Cliff

In 2018, a 35-year-old German tourist at World’s End in Sri Lanka fell from a 1,200-meter cliff while attempting to take a selfie. She slipped near the edge and fell to her death despite rescue efforts. The location is known for its dramatic views but also its dangerous drop-offs.

9. Fell 27 Stories

A 44-year-old teacher from Portugal died in Panama City after falling from the 27th-floor railing of her apartment building. Witnesses said she was attempting a selfie while sitting on the balcony edge when she lost her balance and fell.

8. Drowned in a Lake

Three Indian students drowned after attempting a selfie on a slippery rock near a lake. One slipped, and the others jumped in to help but were trapped in mud and drowned.

7. Killed by a Plane

Two teenage girls in Mexico were killed after stepping onto an airport runway to take selfies. They did not notice an approaching landing aircraft, and both were struck and killed instantly.

6. Fell Off a Mall Roof

A 15-year-old boy in Italy died after climbing onto a shopping mall roof for a selfie. He fell through a ventilation shaft and suffered fatal injuries.

5. Mauled by a Bear

In India, a truck driver tried to take a selfie with an injured bear. The animal attacked him, and he died at the scene.

4. Infant Dropped on Escalator

In a shopping mall in India, a 10-month-old baby died after falling from an escalator. The mother, distracted while taking selfies, lost her grip on the child.

3. Child Dropped in River

A father in India accidentally dropped his four-year-old son into a river while attempting to take a selfie on a bridge. The child was swept away and never recovered.

2. Selfie with a Gun

In Texas, a 16-year-old girl was shot and killed during a party when a gun was mishandled while people were taking selfies. Two men were later charged in connection with the incident.

In Thailand, a woman was struck and killed by a train while trying to take a selfie on or near railway tracks. Her friend was also injured in the incident.
