10 Times Hackers Hijacked Live Television Broadcasts

Long before streaming and social media, live television was one of the most tightly controlled media systems in the world. That didn’t stop hackers, pranksters, and political actors from breaking in and taking over broadcasts in shocking and sometimes bizarre ways. From alien “messages” to explicit content and fake emergency alerts, these intrusions became legendary moments in broadcast history.

10. The “Alien Broadcast” – Southern Television (1977)

Viewers watching a UK news broadcast suddenly lost audio from the studio and instead heard a voice claiming to be an extraterrestrial named Vrillon. The speaker, allegedly representing an “Ashtar Galactic Command,” delivered a message warning humanity to abandon weapons and live peacefully. The identity of the intruder was never confirmed.

9. Captain Midnight Interrupts HBO (1986)

During a movie broadcast, HBO’s satellite signal was hijacked by an unknown individual calling himself “Captain Midnight.” A message criticizing subscription fees appeared on screen, accusing the network of charging too much. The culprit was later traced to a disgruntled satellite dish technician.

8. The Max Headroom Signal Intrusion (1987)

One of the most famous TV hacks ever occurred in Chicago when two stations were briefly taken over by a masked figure resembling Max Headroom. The hijacker delivered distorted speech, bizarre gestures, and surreal antics before the signal was cut. Despite investigations, the perpetrator was never identified.

7. Religious Broadcast Hijack – Adult Channels (1987)

Two adult cable channels were interrupted by a hacker who replaced programming with religious messages. The suspect, later linked to a Christian broadcast worker, allegedly used station equipment to transmit the intrusions, though evidence remained disputed in court.

6. Hezbollah’s Al-Manar Interruption (2006)

During regional conflict, broadcasts from the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Manar TV station were hacked and replaced with propaganda messages and images of destruction. The incident was widely attributed to Israeli cyber operations targeting media networks during wartime.

5. Weather Channel Ransomware Attack (2019)

The Weather Channel was forced to air prerecorded content after a ransomware attack disrupted its live systems. The incident highlighted how modern television infrastructure depends heavily on digital networks vulnerable to cybercrime.

4. Israeli TV News Hijack (2016)

During evening news broadcasts, Israeli channels were briefly taken over by an unknown hacker who displayed political messages criticizing the state and referencing regional tensions. The broadcast also included religious audio before transmission was cut.

3. Fake Zombie Emergency Alert – Montana (2013)

A hacker breached a TV station’s emergency alert system and broadcast a fake warning about a zombie outbreak. The message urged viewers to stay alert for the undead, causing confusion before authorities confirmed it was a hoax.

2. Super Bowl Broadcast Hack – Arizona (2009)

During a live Super Bowl feed, viewers in Tucson saw an unexpected interruption: explicit adult content briefly replaced the game. The incident triggered a federal investigation and compensation to affected cable customers.

1. The “Wyoming Incident” (Unverified)

A mysterious and controversial case involved an alleged hijacking of a local news broadcast featuring disturbing visuals, static messages, and an unsettling tone. Reports claimed viewers experienced physical reactions, though the event remains unverified and possibly caused by signal interference rather than an actual hack.
